Three Years and Counting

In a few months, it will be a full three years since I graduated and qualified to be an Alexander Technique teacher. And what a lot I've learned since then!

Breaking it down

The Alexander Technique begins with awareness, works out body mechanics then explores more easeful ways of moving. Along the way we visit stopping and directing. It becomes the thinking process that underpins all other activities.

The Technique is taught in private lessons

or group classes.

It helps a lot of people

I've seen this Technique work for children, high schoolers and collegiates, as well as folks in their 70-80s. I've seen it balance muscles from one side of the body to the other, help with spinal curvature, and strengthen hips and legs for more secure walking. I've also seen it alleviate pain for flute, string, and keyboard players. I've seen it calm tense shoulders as well as painful hips and knees and feet. I've also seen it calm anxiety.

Before you think it's impossible to deal with all of that, remember it's about

  • body mechanics

  • processes for more effective/easeful movement

  • stopping to notice and made new decisions

That can be applied to nearly anything at practically every age. It's not a miracle. And it doesn't happen fast. You need to apply the process.

The biggest lesson

Using it to take care of myself has meant alleviating knee and hip pain, shoulder pain, and help recovering my low back after gardening stints. After trouble with a compression fracture in my low back, AT work built muscle strength around the spine to support the bone as it heals.

Besides being help for specific issues, it's become a daily practice that maintains my coordination and balance. Weekly "lesson time" helps me work on the whole body to keep it working and improving.
